Conversations with Critters
Walk with the animals. Talk with the animals. And thoughts on a moment in the sky...
Today Critters, we take to the leaden skies, a natural occurrence in these parts of Oregon, and observe three different birds in a dynamic aerial dispute. From the ground we see, in silhouettes framed by the expansive cloud cover, a Cooper’s Hawk, an American Crow and a Barn Swallow.
Meanwhile, back at the Condo and speaking to us from the comforts of the Couch, we find our Core Community Critters Jasper Kitten, Chris and Jojo most interested in what is going on up up up there.
Please, welcome them in excellent instinctive critter conversation. Take to the skies and take it away!
Heidi: Hello, Friends! Welcome to our Furever Friday post! We’ve had quite an eventful week!
Jasper: Hello and welcome, Everyone! We finished our second detective story! The End!
Chris: Greetings! Furthermore, thank you for reading The Case of the Bowled Over Bowler Hat! Full stop!
Jojo: Hello hello! Cuz. We luvluvluv you. Furever. Plus! All of the links to our works of Fiction are listed at The End of This Post. The end.
Jasper: Thank you, Jojo. Now Critters, while we are grounded in fact rather than fiction at the moment, we would like to talk about the three kinds of neighboring wild birds who put on quite a display in the opening video.
Chris: What. Was. That. About. Question mark. Question mark.
Jojo: Good question, Chris.
Chris: Thank you, Jojo. Thank you very much.
Jojo: Of course, Chris. Of course.
Jasper: If my instincts serve me correctly, we can name them in both the vernacular and in the Latin. Please. Proceed.
Chris: One is a Cooper’s Hawk, Astur cooperii.
Jojo: Two is an American Crow, Corvus brachyrhynchos.
Jasper: Three is a Barn Swallow, Hirundo rustica erythrogaster.
Chris: It would appear that they do not get along quite as well as we do on the Couch.
Jasper: Correct, Chris. The Cooper’s Hawk is, in fact, under aerial assault from the Crow and Barn Swallow.
Jojo: It’s a different world out there, my Friends.
Jasper: It is.
Chris: Yes.
Jojo: Is now a good time to share a photo of each bird for the edification and enjoyment of our Dear Gentle Critters and our Dear Gentle Readers?
Jasper: It is.
Chris: Yes.
Jojo: Excellent. I am now pleased to present our Field Notes in full color of these incredible beautiful birds:

Jasper: Thank you, Jojo, this gives us a much fuller visual beyond the video of their silhouettes. Full stop.
Chris: I agree with you, Jasper. Thank you very much, Jojo.
Jojo: You’re very welcome.
Jasper: In my humble opinion of the matter, the Crow and the Barn Swallow are in a state of protecting themselves from and against the Cooper’s Hawk, a raptor. A. Bird. Of. Prey.
Chris: So, what you are saying in plain English, Jasper, is that the Cooper’s Hawk is perceived as a threat.
Jasper: Correct, Chris.
Chris: Thank you for the clarification.
Jasper: Of course.
Jojo: Critters, there is a kind of interspecies teamwork involved here with the Crow and the Barn Swallow going on the offensive and protecting themselves against the perceived threat from the Hawk. The end.
Jasper: That is an illustrative way of putting it, Jojo.
Chris: Thank you, Jojo.
Jojo: Anything to help.
Chris: Critters, this has been a tremendous and I do mean huge amount of activity. The end.
Jojo: Are you getting sleepy, Chris?
Chris: Yes, thank you for asking, Jojo.
Jojo: Of course, Chris. You’re welcome. May I ask you another question?
Chris: Yes.
Jojo: Are you ready for your next nap on the Couch?
Chris: Yes, thank you for asking that too, Jojo.
Jojo: You’re welcome and may I join you?
Chris: Absolutely. Full stop.
Jasper: And with that said, my Friends, we will see you next time for a carefully curated Haiku collection from CwC in celebration of the completion of The Case of the Bowled Over Bowler Hat!
Chris: So, please stay safe and have fun out there and take a moment to look to the skies.
Jojo: The. End.

(Coming soon to IngramSpark, too!)
Haha. Such a cool post with a great gang of critters. I really love American crows and their caws. That barn swallow is so pretty, though. And the old hawk is just doing what he does. Three terrific birds for one terrific post. Loving these. Thank you for sharing, Heidi.
Thank you, Heidi, for loving the animals. And, for embracing "everybirdy" is welcome to love the critters, too!
