The Eldest Male Degus have passed onto the Rainbow Bridge, but one of them, Banting teamed up with his brother, Best (Yes, they were named after the doctors because degus were first used in diabetes research as they cannot metabolize sugar) and when I had my back turned to look at my bookshelf on the other side of the room, STOLE MY SHREDDED WHEAT BISCUIT.
I usually had breakfast upstairs with them when I worked from home or when I was unemployed. I eat my Shredded Wheats dry, and usually gave them the bits at the bottom of the bowl as a treat. They shared the biscuit, and didn't fight over it, which was nice to NOT have to experience the very loud angry squeaks and groans. So even rodents like to purloin Hoomin foods.
I looked them up to read more about them -- cannot metabolize sugar AND live in groups of 100! That is the opposite of me. But that is very cute about the shredded wheat biscuit.
This is an incredible story in and of itself. We had no idea that such events unfolded for Degus in the annals of time. Most impressive. It takes a thief! Plus a shredded wheat biscuit! Incredible.
So many of us have had similar antics, one has to read just to see if the story sways from what we know or stays in the storyline. For me - this stayed in our storyline!
What an excellent retelling! I'm tickled. I never knew beagles were so advanced when it comes to detecting scents. I am sure Julius and Suzy-Q are smiling down on everyone, remembering that excellent caper they pulled off.
Thank you, Heather! It was really fun to write. In general, Beagles will do anything to eat and they have the olfactory chops to do it.:) Thanks again for sharing this incredible story of Julius and Suzy-Q.
I love this line: "Case of the Purloined Pot Roast." :)
Thank you, Neil! It almost resonates with the writings of Poe. Almost!

Thank you, Heather! We are so pleased to be learning about Degus here at Critters. They are incredible.
I really enjoy having them as an animal friend. They're amazing little rodents. I'm really happy in human groups of one to four, but degu groups of four or more are fantastic! The cuddle pile is the best part about degus. (https://www.deviantart.com/bartyjnr/art/Degu-Pile-128273556) and their intelligence-agility training (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o8YdLrzIUwM).
Thank you for the link and helping us all learn about Degus! We look forward to hearing more about them as we continue onwards here at Critters!

Love it! My favorite line from this story …”Nope. According to legend, they ordered a pizza.” 😃 🍕🫶
Thank you, Catherine! Yes, this is the inflection point of the story! Thank you for reading, it’s great to see you here in the comments.:)
