I like that drawing of the food web for the Great Blue Heron, Heidi. I am not familiar with the food web and nice to see it visually. Also a great method to help you remember and visualize it by drawing it yourself. Nice to Jojo doing well and love the retro 70s vest!
Thank you, Neil! The web is a visual way to understand the complexities of an ecosystem rather than a chain where energy runs in one direction only. It was fun to illustrate it by drawing. And Jojo luvluvluvs his vest.
Thank you, James! I saw my neighborhood pair of Great Blue Herons flying overhead this morning. They always inspire me. And a big thank you for bringing me good luck this week. I was able to id a Hairy Woodpecker this morning in the park! Bigger than a Downy and with a longer beak. It was a male with the red head.
Thank you, Mary! Wow just wow, that is such a huge compliment! I used my regular uniball pen and took a shot at it.:) I’d like to do more drawing. Do you have a recommendation for pens and paper? Thanks so much.
Hooray for taking a shot - I just love it (I know, I said that already). I love Staedtler pigment liners. I bought a set of 4 just to try the different tips, and now I buy them individually as needed. They last a long time and the tips and ink don't skip like other pens do. Michael's has them and they also have pretty good sales:
I also use little sketch books with nondescript paper, sometimes I use plain white card stock, I was also given a sketch book that I use from time to time. You go, Heidi!!!
Thank you, Mary! I’m going for it! Will be stocking up on the Staedtlers for sure. Thanks for the link. It’s exciting to see how much people are enjoying this food web drawing. I’ve always been into writing and photography, so this is a new creative discovery. Thank you for the encouragement.:)
Bless your newest addition Jojo! and oh how we love senior rescue, so thank you Heidi! And that is the coolest field note!! Great job! I hope you get out your sketchbook and compile them! We never know until we put our mind to it what we can do! I have said my entire life, "I can't draw or paint." I'm still hesitant, but my desire is there :) That's the most important thing I guess. Going to check out our city's various art courses next year for beginners. ox
Thank you so much, Deborah! We definitely have this drawing discovery in common. When I first saw the Food Web assignment, I figured that I'd do some kind of graphic design on the computer, which is also something I'm unfamiliar with. But when I went further into, I gave drawing a shot and voila! How cool is that!
I love it! I now see that sketchbook with your stack’s name on the cover and your explorations with the critters. Perhaps they will make it into your new artwork! ox
Thank you, Trudi! The vest is really easy for Jojo. It has a Velcro closure for the chest and a Velcro closure for his tummy. It’s fleece lined and super comfy. Thank you so much for being here with us at Critters.:)
Great food web and JO JO and the rest . love it .Have no idea why i didn't get the post last night but found it on substack . Hugs and pets to all the furbabies
Thank you, Mitch, and thank you for looking for the post! Do you think it went to a promotions or junk file? That happens sometimes. We always look forward to having you here with us. Hope you are feeling well. Sending healing vibes.
Feeling far from well but will live . No II checked all files didn't go anywhere , I just never got it . Not blaming you at all . Thinking it is substack at this point because I am not getting much anymore . So I come on and look for friends and of course critters posts .
Thank you, Mitch. It does sound like a tech problem on Substack’s part or your email settings. We definitely don’t want you to miss anything. Do you use the app? Sending healing vibes and luvluvluv from the Critters.
I use a computer but way election went not sure ,I trust any site now . Because I posted many things about stump lol. thank you and critters Heidi, luv luv back to them all and even the shining Star

Yes! I am almost finished with a quick post about the woodpeckers—I’ll sit on it until next week
Looking forward to seeing that!

Great drawing Heidi! I'm impressed. JoJo is adorable, look at that spiky hairstyle, I love it!
Thank you, April! We shall see if I can draw anything else. Perhaps an illustration of Jojo’s wild hair and ‘70s retro vest. So fun.:)
JoJo. I really like your 70s retro vest. It looks great on you. Best to you! Emily Bowersock.
Thank you very much, Emily and thank you to all of the Bowersock Hounds! I’m feeling comfy. Luvluvluv, Jojo
Hehehe I love these critters! And Jojo is rocking his little 70s vest. Is he comfortable getting it on and off?
Thank you, Trudi! The vest is really easy for Jojo. It has a Velcro closure for the chest and a Velcro closure for his tummy. It’s fleece lined and super comfy. Thank you so much for being here with us at Critters.:)

Uniballed food web
Retro vesting for JoJo
Heidi's many skills!
Why not take a chance
A Staedtler pigment liner
Creative outlet
Could not draw my way
Out of a brown paper sack.
For my skills, crayons!
Perhaps I’ll draw next
A rhinoceros auklet
Their horns have secrets
Adorable. Thank you.
Thank you, Susan! We very much appreciate having you here with us at Critters.
Thanks for sharing the Great Blue Heron's food web, and pictures of Jojo, and with his vest too, Heidi and critters.
Thank you, Diana! This morning, we saw 2 Great Blue Herons flying by. Thank so much for being here with us at Critters.:)
Jojo feels right at home. Furever. The vest is both stylish and warming. So cute.:)
