Thank you Heidi and critters for sharing a very important post . I have watched to many animals disappear Because of corporate greed by some . Hugs and love to all
Thank you, Mitch! I always feel encouraged when I see wildlife thriving, even and especially on a local level, so close to home. Take good care and thank you as always for being here with us at Critters.:)
I’m proud of myself! My parents were from Oregon, we lived in Colorado as I was growing up and my Grand mother, who lived lastly in Kentucky, was an avid bird watcher!
All that to say I identified the Nuthatch be for you said it! Simple but satisfying! For me it’s the simple things that give me pleasure!
Thank you, Jules! We are proud of you, too! Nicely done, my friend. Good to know you also have Oregon roots and bird watchers in the family. Looking forward to seeing here at Critters next Tue for Ch 9, too.:)
Thank you, April! All of the positive interactions with you and our Substack naturalists has really helped me adjust to the online format of the Oregon Naturalist course. Next stop: geology!
Thank you, Lois & Critters! The subspecies featured here lives in the Willamette Valley in Oregon, but! Both the White and the Red-breasted Nuthatches live in the South, so take good care of those oak trees.;) Please, let us know your findings in the field and have a super fun weekend!
Arya and I enjoyed this article, especially Arya, since it was about an avian species or rather subspecies. Quite informative. Arya and I have seen blue jays and crows smack the nuts against tree branches. It shows a remarkable degree of intelligence.
Thank you, Perry & Arya! It’s really been an incredible learning experience right here at home about this subspecies of Nuthatch. Birds are so smart and creative.:)
Excellent! I had not heard of the Slender-billed variety of the White-breasted Nuthatch, Heidi. Not a variety familiar here in Eastern Ontario. Where I am we have their cousin "carolinensis."
Thank you, Neil! It’s so helpful to compare critters in our different regions. Until I started researching my assignment for the Oregon Naturalist course, I didn’t fully appreciate how special it is to see this Nuthatch subspecies thriving right here at home. It give me hope.
Thanks for the education on the beautiful Nuthatch, Jasper, Chris and Heidi, and I hope the conservation strategy is successful. For the sake of the Nuthatch and for those lovely oak trees.
Thank you, Diana! Awareness is key in conservation and advocacy. Seeing the Nuthatches thriving really gives us hope.:) Thank you as always for being here with us at Critters.:)

Thank you for this wonderful post Heidi and Critters.
Thank you, Pamela! Btw, I’m seeing goldfinches again! They seem as happy as the nuthatches.:)
Oh that is awesome Heidi, that you are seeing the goldfinch again. I need to fill my feeder!
My kids and I love watching the birds in our backyard. This is fascinating!! Such a beautiful bird. 🐦💕
Thank you, Catherine! Backyard birding is an excellent course in homeschooling. We luvluvluv hearing this!

Good luck with the studies - we will enjoy reading about them!

Ooo, I look forward to that!!
Love the tiny yet mighty nuthatches.
Thank you, Frederick! That really sums it up!
Thank you critters and Heidi for this fascinating information about the Nuthatcher. Does she live in the South? We have oak trees here. Best to you!
