Thanks for this fascinating post about the unicorn of the ocean, Heidi and critters! I particularly liked the photo of the create that whales and dogs evolved from.

Thank you, Diana! Isn’t it incredible to look back at the common land ancestor? From 50 million years ago! 🐾🐾

Very interesting learning about Narwhals! Those diving depths are pretty incredible. Also, very cool to know about their tusk as being a tooth!

Thank you, Neil! The more we learned about Narwhals, the more we came to appreciate how unique they are, especially the tusk and their diving depth.

Evolution is so weird! And fascinating. Walking whales…what , did they dip their little paws in the water to cool off one day? Thanks for critters conversing about the narwhals. I think it’s a very readable way to tell us humans about these amazing critters!

Thank you, Elyse! The divergent evolutionary paths of whales and dogs is pretty amazing, isn’t it? One species became acquatic and the other co-evolved with Hoomans. Thank you so much for reading and commenting and adding to the conversation! 🐾🐾

Wow Heidi , Thank you for the educational journey . I myself have never heard of that whale before let alone seen a pic . The tooth looks scary as well as very long . I did learn a lot today from you . Hugs and peace for you and the critters

Thank you, mitch! Isn’t it amazing that the tusk is a tooth? Maybe it looks scary to other Arctic critters and is somehow protective in that way. It’s a thought.Narwhals have such an unusual form. Thank you very much for being here with us at Critters.:) 🐾🐾

I wonder if they ever get their horns stuck in something while swimming? I will introduce you to the "Baby Beluga" song by Raffi, and you'll end up singing it when you least expect it :) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CDx9zqDpSik) It's a very famous song from my childhood, and most children of a certain generation know it by heart.

Thank you, Squizz! That’s a good question, but I didn’t see any documentation about the tusk getting stuck. The Critters will investigate further! Thank you so much for “Baby Beluga” which is deeply meaningful. Love it.:) 🐾🐾
