Conversations with Critters
Walk with the animals. Talk with the animals. And in memory of Dr. Jane Goodall...

Today Critters, I would like to offer and share my remembrance of Dr. Jane Goodall who passed away in her sleep on October 1 at the age of 91.
Knowing Dr. Jane has been one of the greatest gifts of my life. When I was growing up in the ‘60s and ‘70s, watching her nature shows on a black and white tv, it didn’t seem possible that I would meet her when I was an adult, but through her lectures and then in person for a course on environmental ethics at Schumacher College in England, and other events in Oregon and California, her global presence always seemed to come home to me.
We also shared a great love of dogs especially and their unconditional love for us. Among her many teachings which I have taken to heart is that animals have messages for us if we listen to them. She signed her books for me and I’m sure for many others as “follow your heart”.
Over the years, I felt a great sense of positive influence and life cycle with her. When I got up early on the morning of October 1, I learned of the birth of my great niece and by noontime, I learned of Dr. Jane’s passing. And it is in this great moment, in the embrace of both cycles of life and death, that I offer my condolences and most of all my gratitude and hope that we all continue to bring her great teachings, her goodness into the world. May her memory always be a blessing.
For the animals,
Heidi
